【Procedures and Secrets of Prayer】

(1) Passing through the torii gate

The Torii gate is the boundary between the human world and the Shinto realm. Before passing through the torii, stop and bow to the deity. When walking along the approach to the shrine, leave the center (the path of the gods) open and pass along the edge. Incidentally, after you have finished praying, stop after passing through the torii gate, turn around and bow.

(2) Inserting money offerings

Do not throw it, but gently insert it. There is no fixed amount.

Ring the bell

Ring the bell once or twice to let God know that you have come to visit the shrine. If you do not have a bell, you may bring one.

(4) Nirei Ni-Beating

After the second bow, place your palms together at chest level and move your right hand down about one joint. Then, clap twice with your hands about shoulder-width apart, bring back your right hand, place both palms together, and pray with all your heart. At this time, say your name and address in your heart before praying.

5) One bow

Finally, bow deeply.
